Frequently Asked Questions
Please find below a list of frequently asked questions.
If you have any questions which are not answered in this list, please contact us for further information.
- Are your Instructors fully licensed to teach?Yes! All instructors at Open Road Motoring School are fully licensed Driving Instructors by the DSA. They are experienced and have knowledge of the local areas. Our Instructors not only prepare you for your practical driving test but place a keen emphasis on safe driving for life! Our aim is to get you to drive with confidence.
- Can you offer evening and weekend lessons?Yes! Our Instructors are flexible in their working hours and are able to offer evening and weekend lessons if required. Please call our freephone number on 0800 013 2046 or 020 3326 1595 to discuss your individual requirements.
- Can you pick me up from home and drop me off elsewhere (or vice-versa)?If enough notification is given, our Instructors are usually able to collect and drop you at different destinations (within reason). Your lesson time is not usually affected as a result.
- Do you offer refresher courses/lessons?Yes! Our Instructors are able to offer a refresher lesson or course of lessons to individuals who have passed their practical driving test but may be short of confidence or in need of additional tuition in one or more areas. Refresher lessons are also particularly useful to drivers who have not driven for a while or to those who may need some advice or correction of current driving habits.
- Do you offer Theory test advice and assistance? All of our fully qualified Instructors are able to offer FREE theory test advice and assistance to pupils. If you ask your Instructor, they will also be willing to book the Theory test on your behalf if required to do so. Some of our Instructors have theory test related CD ROM/ DVD discs that they may be able to lend out free of charge.
- Do you teach in automatic or manual vehicles?Currently all our Instructors have cars with manual transmission. The reason for this is that a pupil who takes a driving test in a "manual" car may be permitted to drive any automatic transmission car once they have passed their driving test. However, if a pupil were to take their driving test in an ‘automatic’ car, they would be unable to drive a "manual" car with their current licence. If you have a disability and require lessons in a standard or specially adapted automatic car please let us know so that we can recommend an instructor (automatic car) in your area.
- How long do your lessons last? The length of each lesson may be negotiated between pupil and Instructor but typically, the duration of driving lessons may be 60 minutes, 90 minutes or two hours. Unlike some other Driving Schools, we never collect other pupils whilst you are on your lesson. At Open Road Motoring School, we promise to deliver the full duration of your lesson time. For example, if you book an hour lesson, you will receive an hour of lesson. We never incorporate the time it takes to travel to/from your pick-up destination as part of your lesson duration.
- How long will it take me to pass my driving test?Because driving is a life-skill that is developed on an individual basis, the amount of time it takes to learn to the required D.S.A. test standard will vary from one pupil to another. The Instructors at Open Road Motoring School are fully qualified and know what it takes to attain the required test standard. Our Instructors adopt and utilise preferred teaching methods that have been laid out by the Driving Standards Agency and are therefore well trained to prepare individuals for their driving test.
- What do I need in order to start taking Driving lessons?
Before you start taking driving lessons, you must have a current and valid provisional driving licence. Forms for a provisional licence may be obtained from the Post Office. As a requirement for undertaking driving lessons, you must be able to read a vehicle registration plate from 20.5 metres or 20 metres for the new-style plates. To hold a licence to drive you must also satisfy the statutory medical criteria, details of which may found on the Driver and Vehicle Licensing website. dvla.gov.uk.
UK residents holding a full driving licence issued in another European Union/European Economic Area member state may drive in the UK until their 70th birthday, or can exchange their licence for a British one at any time.
- What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a widely recognised scheme that is open to newly qualified drivers. Statistics have shown that newly qualified drivers are more vulnerable than experienced drivers. Pass Plus offers professional instruction, helping new drivers to gain quality experience, become more skilful drivers, develop a positive driving style and reduce their risk of being involved in an accident. Additionally many motor insurance companies offer greatly reduced insurance policies to new drivers who have completed the Pass Plus scheme. All of our Approved Driving Instructors are registered to offer Pass Plus tuition for those candidates that have successfully passed the practical driving test.
There is no exam at the end of the Pass Plus course. The pupil undertakes six modules, each containing a range of relevant topics. When the pupil has attained or exceeded a satisfactory level in each topic of all modules, he/she will have completed the course. The six modules are:
- Town Driving
- All-weather Driving
- Out of Town Driving and Rural Roads
- Night Driving
- Dual Carriageways
- Motorways
