Driving Standards Agency theory and practical tests
In order to obtain a full driving licence you will need to pass a theory and practical test. Your journey to become a safe independent driver starts now and we at Open Road Motoring School will be with you all the way.
Theory test
A computerised test held in two parts, one immediately after the other. You will need to pass both parts in order to be successful. The first part will be a series of multiple choice questions, answered using a touch-screen. The pass mark is 43 out of 50. The second part is a hazard perception test in which the computer presents a series of 14 video clips of everyday scenes. You will be expected to respond to a developing hazard by clicking a mouse early during its development. One of the clips has two developing hazards. The pass mark is 44 out of 75. Your Open Road instructor will include theory test topics during your practical lessons. To test yourself, why not try the Driving Standard Agency's interactive mock questions online? Click on www.theory-tests.co.uk/home for more details.
Practical test
Congratulations on passing your theory test. Your certificate is valid for two years and, once your driving has reached the appropriate standard, you may book a practical driving test. Your Open Road instructor will monitor your progress closely and will know when best to recommend making the test appointment. To pass the test it is essential that you are fully prepared for all its aspects, which are structured as follows:
- Eyesight check. Before driving the car you will be asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres, or 20 metres for the new style number plates.
- Show me/tell me. A test of knowledge of basic safety checks on your vehicle. These cover aspects such as tyre safety and legality, checking fluids, lights, brakes and power steering. You will be asked one “tell me” explanation question and one "show me" demonstration question. Further information and a list of questions are available from your Open Road instructor. A download version may also be found at the Driving Standard Agency ("DSA") website www.dsa.gov.uk. We will of course go through the items during your practical lessons
- Driving the car. A practical test of about 40 minutes duration, on a specially chosen route designed to incorporate a range of typical road and driving situations. You will be expected to demonstrate your ability to drive safely and show through your driving your knowledge of the Highway Code. During the test you will be required to carry out one reversing exercise and possibly a controlled emergency stop exercise. You will also be expected to independently drive for approximately 10 minutes.
I've passed!!! What now?
You've reached your goal and you are now able to enjoy the freedom of your own full licence to drive independently. It is a great achievement but it is worth remembering that being a new driver makes you vulnerable until you have gained more experience. We at Open Road strongly recommend that you take a Pass Plus course. Pass Plus offers professional instruction, helping new drivers to gain quality experience, become more skilful drivers, develop a positive driving style and reduce their risk of being involved in an accident. There are great insurance benefits too! See Pass Plus for more information, or ask your instructor.
Open Road can also offer you refresher courses or motorway lessons. Perhaps you just fancy a boost in driving confidence – don't be embarrassed to ask. You can always be assured of our friendly support beyond your driving test.
